Brilliant ideas: artist Grayson Perry, Bloomberg (2015) [youtube]
Analysis:
Turner prize winner Grayson Perry creates artwork through performances as canvas paintings in order to present his ideology behind identity, gender and culture. His 14 portraits within his 'who are you?' collection are painted with out being concerned on what the actual portrait's appearance is. They present images regarding the nature of identity, an instant moment taken from a person's life. The painting demonstrates that our individual sense of ourselves are or feel constant, whereas, our identity is a transforming performance that adapts and reconfigures depending on ones experience. Altering our identities.
Within the paintings, Perry uses subjects that represent important facets of the nature of humanities identity. Portraying the character of the persons identity, presenting identity altering moments such as religion, gender or sexuality changes through expressive colours and fluidity of paint and patterns.
Our identity is unique to us, working for our own circumstances and situations, we do not question it. However, when under threat or we feel confused, we are made aware in that moment of how vital identity is.
I will choose to portray identity through different means that Grayson Perry within my designs. The important factor of his artworks are the meanings behind them, the way he presents identity through his expressive painting - not caring about the actual facial appearance of the character, but through colours. I will also not be concerning the human face as part of ones identity within my work and will be using colours, textures and designs to present issues regarding identity and consumerism.
Brief About:
- the turner prize winners work on identity, gender and culture provided inspiration for my designs.
- using the human body in order to represent different ideas through colours and a tongue & cheek mentality would prove to be a big influence later on in my project especially.
- his almost surrealist ceramic vessels, printed tapestries provide an influence through a use of colour and surreal themes through my art
Influence on work:
exploration on identity, my designs will be less focused on elements of identity such as gender, culture etc.
this will allow me to explore identity in a more broad sense
maybe looking into tongue&cheek methods or designing garments or advertisement designs?
using strong colours in a quirky way?
